I believe there are a lot of social media platforms that are under-utilized by employers and/or recruiters. This might result from one of two reasons, either there is a lack of capacity or a lack of understanding about how to best utilize each platform.

If it is the latter, I would highly recommend the book "Jab, Jab, Jab Right Hook" by Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary does a fantastic job illustrating what to do and what not to do when it comes to developing high-quality content for each major platform (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Pinterest). One of the biggest takeaways from this book is the importance of creating native content for each of these platforms. If not, you will not capitalize on the impact that your content could otherwise make.

As attracting talent requires more engagement between employers and candidates, I have decided to start a "Promoting your employer brand on Social Media" series by looking into how some companies are using social media to attract talent while sharing any relevant experiences on I have had on the different social media platforms.

This week, I am focused on the aspects of LinkedIn that are most beneficial for employers:

1. A free Company Profile/Page: This provides individuals with insight into what makes a company different, the product/services offered, job postings and the ability to stay on top of trending news through the feed.

2. Encouraging employees (especially managers) to link their profiles to your company: More traffic can be driven to a Company Page just by virtue of having employee profiles connected to it.

3. Advertising Job postings to your ideal candidate: LinkedIn provides affordable options to employers by presenting it to qualified candidates, including those who turn on their notifications for a specific type of job. I also find that it is easier for your network to share these postings and make recommendations for a specific job opening.

4. Proactively network at a larger scale: LinkedIn Recruiter is a powerful paid license that allows employers to find, engage, and organize talent. If that is not in your budget, you also have the ability to search key terms "e.g. SAP" to connect with individuals who might have the skill set that you are looking for.

5. It provides employers insight into prospective talent: Not only are you able to view an individuals profile (e.g. recommendations, work experience, content posted, etc.) You also have the opportunity to see if they follow your company page and engages with your content.

Overall, LinkedIn is an extremely affordable, effective and powerful tool for employers to share their employer brand, maintain a talent pipeline and to engage the public.
