As part of my company's values and my personal values, I feel that lifelong learning is crucial to helping me add value wherever I go. However, working full time and trying to prioritize family, friends, and life long learning can be tricky at times so I feel that documenting my journey on a weekly basis is a great way to helping me stay accountable to my commitment!
This week, my top 3 favourite resources include:
1. Recru!tment Now's podcast featuring ATB's Director of Talent Management, Shahzia Noorally.
Some of the notable takeaways include the 85-10-5 principle that is used to guide employees as to how they should use their time. 85% of their time is used to complete their core work functions, 10% of their time is used for learning and 5% of their time is used to innovate. This is a very interesting breakdown because most companies expect their employees to learn and innovate but don't always create room for them to do so. Not only does this breakdown create room for innovation but it also helps promotes a workforce to use their time effectively especially in a fast paced world.
Shahzia also highlighted another point that resonated with me, this includes leading recruiters who enable their hiring leaders by showing up as partners rather than doing everything on behalf of the leader. Based on personal experience, this is an extremely smart decision that allows recruiters to work more strategically and contribute more value added work rather than working hours on end without creating space to think and act like a strategic partner.
2. Academy Ocean's blog on "How large companies such as Dropbox, Nike, Salesforce, MailChimp, Google, and Pepsi welcomes new hires."
This is a great read for employers who are looking to either create an on-boarding process or are looking to revamp their current on-boarding process so they can create an excellent candidate experience! As new employees start a role, there are a large number of uncertainties that cross their mind which can make them extremely nervous for their first day/week/month at the new work place. The more that an employer can put a new candidate at ease, the easier it is for the new employee to focus on more important things like establishing rapport with key stakeholders and learning their roles and responsibilities.
3. HRD's article on "How the best workplaces are winning over millennials"
In the last 3 years, there has been an increasing number of content that is created to help employers better understand how to attract and engage millenials. Within this article, three key actions stood out to me: Fair pay, treat them fairly and motivate them. Even though this title was specifically about millenials, I feel that all three of those actions are applicable to engaging any staff member! After all, if an employee is worried about whether or not they can pay the bills, they are less able to effectively carry out their tasks and if they are not working in a psychologically safe work place, they are also less likely to be engaged or stay at their current work place.
