Over the last three years, I have been able to support a variety of Human Resources teams with their recruitment processes. Through this journey, I have conducted over 500 interviews which has allowed me to witness numerous success stories along with a handful of not so successful ones.
Using my person experience, interactions with other recruiters along with trending research, I am excited to help others by providing one tip a week for job seekers.
This week, the topic "Check yourself" stems from the importance of being mindful of how you act once you step out of your car and are heading into an interview.
I noticed one common mistake that a few candidates make is how they interact with the receptionist in comparison to the interviewer.
I remember one time in particular, a candidate was extremely rude to the receptionist not knowing that the receptionist would inform the hiring leader and myself about their interaction. Unfortunately, that did not leave us with a good first impression because we were worried about how they would treat our clients and other team members if they aren't being supervised.
Even though things didn't start off on the right foot, we decided to proceed with the interview and ask the candidate about their perspective as to why they treated our receptionist that way. However, not every candidate is as lucky as the one that we interviewed because I have also met recruiters and hiring leaders who will ask the candidate to leave if they were disrespectful and depending on the candidates reason for being rude, I have also had to ask a candidate to leave an to reapply on a later date.
The moral of the story? No matter how flustered or nervous you are feeling, remember to smile and be polite to every individual that you cross paths with on the way into and out of your interview. Why? You will never know who you interacted with (e.g. an interviewer who is covering reception) and how those interactions will impact your interview!
