Searching for your next job is a full time job in itself, so why not be strategic with your search? After all, it might be a lot less overwhelming.

There are two big things to take into consideration when you are developing your strategy. Do you have the luxury of finding a new position while being employed? or Are you currently unemployed and are scrambling to find a new position ASAP?

If you have the luxury of finding a new position while being employed, I would suggest that you keep the following in mind:

1. Identify which employers you want to work with

This will help you develop your network and connect with key hiring managers/ recruiters to get a better understanding of their culture, a day in the life of an employee there and any key benefits. Note, you are not asking for a job at this point. Instead, you are gathering information, developing your network and getting on to other people's radars. This allows you to be more proactive in your job search rather than passively submitting a resume and waiting to hear back.

2. Set notifications to inform you of open positions

Nowadays, most employers have a career portal that allows you to set notifications for jobs you might be interested in. In addition, other sites such as Indeed, LinkedIn, etc. also allows you to set notifications based on key words and location.

3. Stay organized in your job search

Create a Trello list or excel spreadsheet to track the employers that you have applied to including the positions that you have applied for and save a copy of the job description. Sometimes, when a job posting closes, the job description is no longer accessible which makes it difficult for you to prepare for the interview. Staying organized also allows you to better prepare for call- backs and interviews because you actually remembered what you applied for!

If you are currently unemployed and are scrambling to find a new position, I find that the three tips provided also helps you.

One additional tip that I would add on for you is, find a method that allows you to showcase your competencies. Whether it is creating content on social media platforms like Linkedin or volunteering at industry events that allows you to shake hands with decision makers.

After all, applying for a job is like a game of chance unfortunately. You never know who you are competing against or who is screening your resume including what they are looking for (e.g. aesthetics vs. experience right off the bat). That is why it is important to continuously network and to stay on their radar.
