Have you recently applied for a job and/or starting a new role soon? Then it is important for you to audit your social media accounts.
Nowadays, we stay updated with one another by posting our photos and updates on social media. At times, we might even draft a heated post about a recent turn of events. Though, it is important to remember that once you post content onto the internet, you cannot take it back!
With an increasing number of employers searching candidates up online to see if they have posted anything that can create a negative association with the company's image, it is important to do an audit on your social media platforms to see if there is anything that might hinder your ability to land your dream role.
To start the auditing process, evaluate the following:
1) Is your profile set on private or public view?
If it is public, a quick fix if you set your profile to private so that only your inner circle can see your posts.
2) Do a google search on yourself
See what type of information pops up when you search your name and see if you can do anything to remedy any "negative" posts.
3) Outside of LinkedIn, is it worth using a slightly different name?
For example, using your fist name and middle name vs. your first name and last name so you can control who views your content.
4) On LinkedIn, what type of content are you liking, commenting, reposting and creating?
Remember, religion and politics can be a touchy topic. I have also hear of stories where employers have either let go or decided not to move forward with an individual because they engaged with hate crime.
Taking extra time to audit your social media activity can strongly influence your ability to land your next role!
